Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy held a press conference to inform Suffolk County residents of safety precautions being taken as Hurricane Earl draws closer to Long Island. The Nationall Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for Suffolk County and a tropical storm watch for Nassau County. As reported on the Eyewitness News website, The Long Island Railroad will suspend service beginning today to the east of Long Island. The website also states the suspension will remain in effect until Saturday, September 4th.

Exeutive Levy implemented a CodeRed system that will allow Long Islanders to subscribe for emergency notifications directly to your cell phone or landline. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has set up staging areas should there be a need for restoration.

Long Island politicians and executives are taking necessary steps to assure the safety of its residents. However; with YouTube being the world’s most popular online video community and other social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it would be beneficial to implement a social networking strategy for emergency situations such as Hurricane Earl.

Connecting with friends online is a useful way to spread the word quickly and effectively.
