Goodwill's long awaited "mystery announcement" was made Monday, June 28, 2010.   They are beginning a Donate Movement to establish a donation icon on newly purchased items, alongside the recycle icon.  With the backing of sponsor, Levi Strauss, and their spokesperson, author Lorie Marrero, they are promoting donation as another type of recycling.

New slogan

The slogan repeated in the promotion of this program is, "Just as there are things you recycle, there are things you donate."   There is a new "donate" logo that is similar in graphics to the "recycle" icon.  It is hoped that businesses will adopt this as a packaging symbol to remind people to donate the item when they are done with it, instead of sending it to a landfill.

Helping the planet and the people on it

Goodwill hopes to foster donation as an ecologically conscious thing to do, but also to stress the community benefits of donating goods no longer needed.  There are jobs and job training created by the donation of goods to Goodwill stores around the world.   When you help someone get employment, you are helping entire families.  This is the "teach a person to fish" philosophy, the more long-term type of alternative to welfare programs or charities.

Calculate the impact

There is an online donation impact calculator on the website for the program that will give an estimate of what  you can provide in the way of postive help through your donation.  For instance, if you donate a coat, you can provide 11 minutes of career counseling to someone seeking employment.

Meet the Ambassador

Lorrie Marrero is being presented as the spokesperson for the Donation Movement.  (They actually refer to her as an Ambassador, so I guess that would make her a Goodwill Ambassador?)  Here is how the website for the Donate program introduces her:

"Lorie Marrero, best-selling author of The Clutter Diet: The Skinny on Organizing Your Home and Taking Control of Your Life, helps people de-clutter their lives and decide what to give away.

Together with Goodwill, Lorie is showing people that cleaning out their closets and donating is one way to live simply, live green and have community impact."

Duh!

Whether you consider yourself environmentally-minded or not, this is really just common sense.  Why would someone throw something away that someone else could use?  It is just as simple to drop the goods by your local Goodwill as it is to throw it away!  And, the feeling you get is priceless.
