Healthcare is currently and undeniably the most talked about and debated subject in the U.S. But putting the politics of our healthcare system aside, another phenomenon is taking place in our healthcare system: “The internet.”Social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and even Second Life are allowing patients access to more information on health than ever. One recent example of this phenomenon is "The Mayo Clinic." The Mayo Clinic is a Minn.-based hospital system that recently used Twitter to announce the future release of a study on Celiac disease. What is unusual about this particular “tweet” by the Mayo Clinic is that typically information found in a new study is reversed for journalists only. The followers (on Twitter) of the Mayo Clinic who have Celiac disease were permitted to blog about the study when it was released to the public. The study was promoted through video, Facebook and Youtube. These social and interactive means are allowing patients to start a conversation about an issue that is not only important to them and their families but also their health.
In the case of healthcare, Twitter is not just providing information, it is providing hope.
