The 'soccerization' of Qwest Field continues with upper deck tarps

Qwest Field is now the home of a second major league sports franchise, Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). The Seahawks of the NFL share more than a stadium with Sounders FC, they also share front office operations under the Vulcan Sports Entertainment banner.

Vulcan have stated their commitment to making Qwest Field as much like a 'world class venue' for soccer as they can. Sounders FC will be selling seats only in the lower bowl for MLS regular season matches. The decision was made to cover the upper deck seats to increase atmosphere and add a professional look.

Now the tarps are being put in place, and we can see that the main color scheme is dark blue and white. The photo above shows the outstretched leg of a soccer player reaching across more than three sections of the upper deck.

Down at field level the turf is being scrubbed and readied for adding of the soccer markings.

Seattle Sounders FC kick off their first home match March 19 at Qwest Field against the New York Red Bulls. SSFC are approaching 18,500 season tickets sold. The lower bowl has 24,500 planned open seats, but could be increased to 27.5 if strong pre-sales continue.

Earlier in 2008 Qwest Field removed around half of its Seahawks banners and replaced them with Sounders FC banners, most notably on the Puget Sound side of the stadium.
