Sounders milestone: 20,000 season tickets sold with a month to go before kick off

With quarter-page newspaper ads around Puget Sound's dailies over the last week advertising 'buy your season ticket and get Chelsea' ...Sounders FC have just passed the 20,000 mark for combined season ticket sales.

The late surge could see the club get as high as 21,000 before kick off in less than a month.

For a while Seattle were 'stuck' on around 18,600, but as anticipated, when 1/2 seaon packages went on sale the numbers rose. This week they rose further as fans adjusted to the news that season ticket holders would get Sounders-Chelsea on July 18 at regular price and as a part of the season package.

This especially increased sales in the supporters main stand (south end) where the club are now at over 80% sold out, and have under 300 general admission seats left to sell.

Most other sections of Qwest Field's lower bowl are already full. Seats remain in the 'four corners' with a few choice ones sprinkled in here and there.

The Sounders announced yesterday that they will open more of the lower level for the home opener against New York Red Bulls. The capacity for that match will thus be raised from 24,500 to just above 27,000.

Full season, partial season and group sales are currently underway. Individual match tickets are expected to go on sale March 2nd at 10:00 AM Seattle time. The new SoundersFC.com ticket page is here.

what i don't get is...why did they close off the bird's next in the north end-zone for the mls campaign? i'd think that 2,500 supporters on metal bleachers would help the team. that, and with a capacity at 27K (the same as Home Depot Center, by the way), we'd probably STILL sell-out every game, and having an avg. of 27K/match versus 24 and change looks so much better.
