(NEWCASTLE, WA) – On Monday July 20th players and staff members of Seattle Wolves Football Club worked underneath the luminescent Washington sun at the Golf Club at Newcastle for the Soccer Saves Classic Tournament.
The Wolves were proud to assist with the event in an attempt to raise money for Save the Children, the leading independent philanthropic organization in Africa that aims to create a stronger quality of life for children in need.
Veteran striker Alex Chursky was pleased with the opportunity, stating, “This is a fantastic way to give back to our community and to lend ourselves to a worthy cause.”
Chursky and thirteen other Wolves players assisted the many participants of the tournament at various holes, interacting with the likes of Seattle Sounders manager Sigi Schmid and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.
These various Seattle sports personalities came together to support Save the Children and Soccer Saves, as the latter acts as the humanitarian arm of the Northwest Soccer Fund, and the organization uses the sport of soccer to create opportunities for the world’s youth to live safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Co-founded by Seattle soccer icon Cliff McGrath and philanthropist Frank Schott, Soccer Saves strives to bring awareness to the disenfranchised youth of Africa and to help these individuals lead happier lives.
The organization promotes healthy lifestyles through soccer-based programs that combat gender violence among young men and reduce the incidence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
All the Wolves players, including wingers Ely Allen and Sean Morris, fullback Jamie Finch, and midfielder Evan Morgan did their part to raise awareness for this charitable cause.
The club even entered a player in the event, as Matt Hulen came the closest of any of the tournament’s participants to winning the hole in one competition on hole twelve.
Following the day’s festivities, Wolves General Manager Andrew Opatkiewicz and Director of Public Relations Alex Caulfield attended the Cliff McGrath Benefit Dinner in honor of the legendary NCAA coach.
Overall Seattle’s players and staff thoroughly enjoyed their time working with Soccer Saves, and look forward to partnering with the organization in the future.
Now the club eagerly turns its attention to the 2009 PDL National Playoffs, as the Wolves qualified for the post-season in only their first season of league play.
On Thursday the Wolves (10-3-3) travel down Interstate 5 to the Rose City to take on the Portland Timbers U-23 (11-3-2) in the first round of the divisional playoffs.
The winner of this contest will face the 2009 Northwest Division champion Kitsap Pumas in Bremerton on Saturday July 25th.

Speaking of Ely Allen, he just signed with DC United of the MLS.
Thanks for the update, Jon. I'd think he won't be playing for the Wolves Thursday, then.
No problem, yeah he just signed the contracts today and last time i talked to him, (about 6:30) he was still at home so I'm assuming he didn't travel to portland.
