Kitsap Pumas remain undefeated after 2:2 draw in Salem, Oregon

The Kitsap Pumas drew 2:2 with the Cascade Surge Wednesday night in Salem Oregon in PDL Northwest soccer action.

Although the new club in West Sound remain undefeated with the draw, the players expressed disappointment in giving up a late goal that took away what could have been a fifth victory. Cascade scored in the three added minutes of stoppage time to deny Kitsap another win.

Floyd Croll kicks the ball away for the Pumas at Cascade last night.

"We need one,"(a wake-up call) forward Stephen Phillips told the Kitsap Sun. "We were riding a high for a little bit, but this lets us know there are things we still need to work on."

"This will definitely help us get up for the next couple of games," Defender Max Lipset said.

Phillips scored both goals for the Pumas. Kitsap took the lead in the 15th minute when a Kyle Johnson free kick was routed to Phillips by Spencer Schomaker. Cascade drew level in the 36th thanks to Armando Rodriguez.

Phillips got this second goal of the night, and third of the season, in the 78th minute when Eli Gordley got him the ball for the clean finish.

It looked like Kitsap would get it's fourth away win of the campaign, but Cascade scored on a scramble in front of the Pumas goal in stoppage time to draw the Surge level.

The Pumas' point moves them all alone to the top of the Northwest division. They are now on equal matches played with the Portland Timbers U-23's and have 14 points to Portland's 13. The two clubs will face off this coming Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Bremerton at 7:00 PM.

Pumas match report / press release:

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- In a rare moment when the Kitsap Pumas defense was caught out of position,  the Cascade Surge netted a goal in injury time to escape with a 2-2 tie Wednesday night at McCullough Stadium on the Willamette University campus in Salem, Oregon.

Cascade's Arron Patrick corralled an Eli Gordley clearance and passed toTom Milroy as the Pumas defense headed back upfield. Pumas Goalkeeper Floyd Croll couldn't recover in time as Milroy scored.

The Pumas started off strong as Stephen Phillips scored in the 15th minute off a Spencer Schomaker assist. Following a Kyle Johnson free kick into the wall, Schomaker quickly tapped it to Phillips for the score.

The Surge tied things up when Armando Rodriguez took a great pass from Patrick who had found a seam in the Kitsap defense and put it past Croll for the score.

After a torrential downpour passed through the last moments of the first half and halftime, both teams had chances to score before Phillips put the Pumas back on top in the 78th minute. The goal came after Johnson's corner pinballed around several players before Eli Gordley passed it to Phillips who quickly pumped it in.

But the defensive letdown led to a yellow card for Patrick as he ran past the Pumas bench taunting the coaches and players. Afterward, officials and coaches had to separate players as both sides exchanged words.
