Filling Qwest with flags: Immortal Fury leads the way for Sounders FC fans

What ever happened to Joe, the guy who  made the Chief Sealth Sounders flag? He's cheering it forward with the Immortal Fury Flag Initiative. Joe's coordinating efforts to get as many flags as possible around the rest of Qwest. Right now the majority of flag color comes from the South end.

Joe took the time to write us about how the goal of covering Qwest Field with Sounders flags is coming along...

The Immortal Fury supporters group is passionate about supporting the team on match day using colorful displays of flags and other tifo. Looking out from the south end supporters section one day I realized that the rest of the stadium, who are the vast majority of fans, is a largely untapped source of energy and excitement. These fans, who number well over 25,000, are just as passionate and enthusiastic about our team as the most hardcore south end supporters. Thus, the Immortal group set out to find a way to help bring the atmosphere and participation of the south end to everyone!

Oddly enough, the idea for the Immortal Flag Initiative was born while reading the Qwest stadium guidelines, the concept being that sturdy and colorful flags could be produced in a cost effective manner by following the stadium rules for non-general admission sections.

After posting my initial concept on SeattleSoccerTalk.com, the idea received immediate attention and fans throughout the stadium contributed more than $400 in the first two days alone.

The Initiative is completely fan-directed and the flags are funded by members of each section. The flags are intended for long-term use so the more fans who become involved the more flags we will potentially see. Several fans have mentioned that Chelsea matches feature a lot of small flags throughout the stadium. The difference here is that those flags are provided by the organization. The Flag Initiative is driven by you, the fans!

Flag making parties will continue throughout the season and there is even a "Phase II" project concept in the works (stay tuned for more).

I've been asked, "why do all this for sections you're not a part of?"

I am enthralled by our atmosphere, I am proud to be a Sounder and I am thrilled to be working alongside so many great fans to make Qwest the best match day experience on Earth and make the Sounders the most fantastically supported team there is! ---Joe Olson
