United, Tottenham and the Berbatov effect

Is Tottenham handling Berbatov the right way?

It’s hard to understand why Tottenham is handling the Dimitar Berbatov issue this way. First of all, they have most likely overvalued him at 30 million pounds, although most likely that’s because Manchester United possesses formidable financial capabilities and they believe that the Reds will spare no expense in obtaining a piece they deem crucial to securing another Premiership crown.

My fellow Soccer Examiner deemed in this post that Berbatov is not a need for United. Allow me to agree, as they hold the pieces right now to a team that can win titles. Berbatov would be, however, a luxury, and a luxury that in the long run would make the squad better, more potent up front and able to take a little of the pressure off of Cristiano Ronaldo to both control the game in the midfield and provide a majority of the scoring.

And luxuries my dear friends, for those of you familiar with the club, are not in short supply at Old Trafford. That’s why I still believe you will see this go through.

Back to Tottenham’s strange stance -- they’re threatening to put Berbatov down to the second team and not transfer him, but what good are these threats going to do? And if the transfer does not go through, how silly is it to upset your most potent striker when you look at the big picture? Very odd.

Furthermore, what is the reason for United being the only team that comes up when interest in the Bulgarian is mentioned? Given the high price, yes, there are not many teams that could afford him. But there’s one I can think of that starts with a CH- and ends with a “How much?”

The Blues, who have been courting Robinho from Real Madrid to no end, obviously want help up front. Why are they not interested at all in Berbatov, who unlike Robinho has already proven that he is extremely potent in Premier League play? After going through the Shevchenko episode, shouldn’t they at least have a slight, slight interest in someone who has shown that they can excel at this level?

Running over a few other rumors flying around today with our good friend The Guardian … Liverpool looking at Albert Riera after the Gareth Barry episode ended in nothing but heartache (apparently they didn’t warn the Gunners, though)…Lars Christian Jacobson potentially heading to Everton….and my favorite, Shaun Wright-Phillips potentially headed to Manchester City if the bid is accepted. City seem to be involved in every other transfer rumor these days, but I like this one. Wright-Phillips brings all the pace you could want, a quality that surely any team could use, but one that Chelsea seems at times unsure about employing.

So what do you think about some of the Berbatov issues that were brought up above? And do any of the possible transfers listed seem intriguing for those particular teams?

OK, since a majority of people thought Chelsea signing Robinho would be the deciding factor in the EPL race, let’s see what everyone thinks about Berbatov’s potential impact.
