Playing on three fronts was going to take a toll on Athletic Bilbao and that was seen on Wednesday as second division side Rayo Vallecano ousted them from the Copa del Rey. The Basques thus become the second upset in this round after Real Madrid. Although they dominated the match, it was their play in front of the Rayo goal that was prematurely ended the Basques chances of making another run in the cup.
Meanwhile Mallorca stayed alive after winning 1-0 against Valladolid. The win plus the goal they scored on the road were enough to help the islanders advance on away goals.
There is still one match that needs to be played and then the round of 16 will start on January 6th & 13th.
