Easter egg hunting with your dog

Easter egg hunting is not just for small children, but something fun and festive that we all can do with our dogs. A lot of our dogs were bred to hunt or retrieve, and our dogs’ noses are 100 times more sensitive than ours. Here is what I’ve done in previous years.

Go out and buy some of those fun colorful plastic eggs, you know the ones we typically fill with candy or cash for children to find. This time fill them with your dog’s favorite healthy treats. On Saturday or Sunday, as you’re celebrating the Easter Holiday, confine your dog to a crate or a separate room while you strategically hide the treat filled eggs in your backyard or living room. You can place them in between the sofa cushions or underneath the dining room table, whatever you want.

Tips:

  1. Keep a map or remember where the eggs were hidden and how many. Your dog may need some help finding them at first.
  2. It might be more fun and interactive if your dog has not had a meal immediately before the hunt begins. I recommend doing the hunt on an empty stomach followed by a small meal after the last egg is found.
  3. Do multiple hunts. It may take your dog a few tries to get the idea so be patient and repeat. Perhaps start off with something easy and obvious and as your dogs become more familiar with the act of hunting for the egg, make it more challenging by hiding an egg under a pillow or blanket.
  4. Use this opportunity to practice some of your commands: go, bring it, off, etc.
  5. Take some video and pictures of the hunt. They’ll surely make for fun keepsakes.

Caution: Some dogs may want to eat the plastic eggs, which I do not recommend, so please be certain to be vigilant during the hunt.

Our dogs for many of us are our furry kids, and I love to include Rufus, my red smooth miniature dachshund, in as many events and holidays as possible. The Easter egg hunt can be 15 minutes or an hour of fun; it’s all up to you and your dogs.
