Ten ways to be in the News

As a follow-up to my recent article about how to write a press release, I have created a new top ten list to help keep your small business on the front page of your local newspapers.  It can often be as simple as asking for news coverage or doing what you do best.

  1. Ask the editor or your favorite reporter to do a feature about your business.  Send them a list of ideas or a press release to start the conversation.
  2. Offer a free program or service to the community.  Many newspapers are in the business of selling advertising, but are willing to publish announcements about your upcoming events.
  3. Take a great photo of your new office, sign or building!  Remember to make it news.
  4. Show off your new employees.  Be sure to include their background, what they will be doing at your company and a smiling photo!
  5. Celebrate your success - Have you been in business for one year, five years or one hundred years?  Tell the world about it!
  6. Collaborate with another small business or the local chamber of commerce to host an event or sponsor the baseball team or other community project.
  7. Recognize your employees for their loyalty, commitment to customer service or their volunteer service.   Include all the details and a photo of the stars on your team!
  8. Announce your new products or services - this is likely to be the toughest ones to get published, but careful wording makes it relevant and timely. 
  9. Demonstrate your resilience during tough times - sometimes the fact that you are still  in business is all the good news you need to make the news.
  10. Highlight your accomplishments - did you receive your MBA or gain a new credential/certification in your area of expertise that will help you better serve your customers' needs.
