- Stephen A. Douglas, as the Northern Democratic candidate in 1860, won more popular votes, but less electoral votes, than John C. Breckinridge.
- Enoch Louis Lowe served as President of Maryland's electors in the 1860 Presidential election. The former Governor of Maryland, he supported secession for Maryland, and moved to Virginia for the duration of the Civil War.
