Boil and steep your chopped cabbage Credit: Alicia Bayer
- Boil and steep your chopped cabbage
- The water after steeping will be a dark shade of blue to purple (tap water may affect the shade slightly, depending on the pH of your local water)
- Put a small amount of the steeped water in each compartment
- Assemble a variety of substances with various pH levels
- Experimenting with adding a substance
- Even toddlers can try this with benign ingredients
- On top from left to right: hot sauce, white wine, lemon juice, witch hazel, alcohol, fingernail polish remover, hydrogen peroxide. On bottom: control spot with nothing added, baking powder, alum, salt, club soda, apple cider vinegar, baking soda
- Here, a child was experimenting with changing the water back to blue/purple after changing its color, with the introduction of another substance (the foaming compartment had baking soda and vinegar added, causing an expected reaction)
