- Permanent records like wills, birth certificates, real estate papers, and expensive jewelry that is worn often etc. should be kept inside home in a fire-resistant safe.
- Keep a copy of important records that you will need at a moments notice (birth certificates, passport, deeds, insurance policies, wills, car titles, expensive jewelry that is not worn often and important photographs that can never be replaced.)
- Items stored long-term in basements or on the floor should be in a plastic tote with a lid to keep out moisture, smoke or water damage.
- Keep a list of major appliance and other purchases. Receipts can be scanned into a computer file labeled "Appliances." Update this file each time an appliance is replaced.
- Specialty items like instruments, artwork and antique furniture should be appraised, insured well, and a copy of that appraisal should be kept in an off-site safe-deposit box.
