- Ball headed straight pins hold bay leaves to Styrofoam ball.
- Overlap leaves starting at the base.
- Add a layer of another material above the leaves, following the leaf edges to form a flowing line. Pinto beans were used here.
- A bottom row of leaves can be added and left unattached at the bottom. The opposite could be done. Attach leaves at the bottom and leave the tops free, similar to an artichoke.
- After adding the bulk of the leaves, adjust the location of any straight pins that are not in sync with the design created.
- One topiary was topped with a craft apple "pick" and the other with citrus peels that drape from the top of the ball. The base was filled with dried moss, small pine cones and beans.
- A raffia bow tied just below the ball adds interest. The tails of the bow on one topiary was wound around the topiary trunk
