The beginning. The gas cap cover was the first to get stripped. I started with a chemical stripper then finished the process with a wire brush on a drill.
- The beginning. The gas cap cover was the first to get stripped. I started with a chemical stripper then finished the process with a wire brush on a drill.
- The primer is done. I used two coats of primer and three coats of flat black on the whole tank.
- The beginning of pain... The tank was a little more to work with because of a horribly botched clear coat job.
- Here you can see how the chemical stripper is trying to eat through the clear coat, but it isn't making much progress.
- On this side, the paint actually peeled off in sizable sheets. That made it a little easier on me.
- Finally it was down to the wire brush, as the chemical just wasn't doing the job.
- Here is a closeup of all the different layers that were on the bike. I don't think that any of it was original paint, as there was a dent on one side that had been filled in with Bondo. If it had remained silver, it would have matched my other bike...
- Here are the rust holes that were waiting for me at the bottom of the tank under all that paint.
- Here is a close up shot of one of the holes in the tank. JB Stick Weld was my friend here...
- The first coat of primer is on. Although this is my first paint job and I was doing it with a rattle can, I think it looks pretty close to professional grade. Or not...
- The first coat of black going on. I almost left it like this, as the gray and black mix looked really cool.
- Here is the almost finished product. I wanted to make sure that the paint job looked ok with the rest of the bike. This is just before the last coat of black.
- All done! The Honda name badges are held in place by two very small screws, so taking them off and putting them back on was a breeze. And the gold color of the badges looks really sharp against the flat black of the tank.
- Here it is from the front. She just needs some white wall tires, then she will be ready for some cruising. Maybe some shorty pipes with black exhaust wrap...

Wow, that seat looks like it's in pretty darn good shape.
That is one thing that I was very surprised about. The material is still nice and supple with no rips or anything.
