- What's up with these plastic milk crates scattered in the dunes? I asked a park ranger, and he said that they are protecting turtle nests. The Sandy Neck barrier beach serves as nesting grounds for diamondback terrapins, and each year, researchers catalogue the number of nests and turtles. The eggs are due to hatch within the next week, or so. I will keep you posted!
