- Sapelo Islands Shell rings were near a channel in the tidal marshes. The tidal creek has eroded away part of one of the rings.
- The village at Poverty Point was directly adjacen to a bayou and in the past, close to the old channel of the Mississippi River.
- The main mound at Poverty Point is one of the largest Indian mounds in Louisiana, even though it is the second oldest.
