- When Roman legions tried to block Hannibals advance near the Rhone River, Gen. Scipio (Romans) sent scouts. Hannibal also sent scouts in the form of 500 cavalry. Pacquiao scouted Cotto by testing his power. But Cotto attacked without knowing the full extent of Manny's speed or punching power. Unlike Scipio, round 1 was a one-sided intelligence gathering exercise. (History Channel)
- Like Cotto, Roman legions were confident of themselves. They were the dominant military force in the ancient world. In tight square formations they moved forward and attacked Hannibal. The Carthaginian general placed his best soldiers in the middle to hold the line. It was a trap. Pacquiao baited Cotto to move forward so he could counter from Cotto's left, where he is vulnerable to counter punches. (History Channel)
- As Roman legions advanced, Hannibal ordered the left and right flank to move forward in order to squeeze the enemy in the middle. When the Roman soldiers were squeezed in, they lacked the necessary space to fight their adversary. Similarly, when Cotto punched with his lead left jab, Manny busted him up from the side. He needed Cotto to open up in order to be vulnerable. (History Channel)
- Carthaginian cavalry sneaked up from behind in order to finish off the Roman legions. Hannibal's officers were motivated - their commander routinely crucified ineffective officers. Cotto backing up and boxing in subsequent rounds was too late and ineffectual. Pacquiao had already done his damage. (History Channel)
