Kathi Alexander discovered that Vinny, a 4-year-old domestic mediumhair she fostered last fall, was deaf. He acted like a kitten, was generally unruly and had to be trained. She used sign language (which Vinny selectively ignored) to communicate with him. Vinny was adopted as a companion for a young kitten who needed a playmate. The two of them tumbled off into the sunset together.

- Olivia, an elderly cat whod been abandoned, stayed in Alexanders home at the same time as Vinny. She was not expected to live and was not even meant to be a foster. Alexander took the ill, skin-and-bones cat home, expecting to nurse her through her final days. But Olivia was a survivor; she recovered and was adopted. She had been given another chance and she was going to take it.
- Gizmo is Alexanders favorite foster cat (so far). He came to her as a 9-year-old whose owner had gone into an assisted-living facility; none of the other family members could care for the cat. After just a couple days of fostering Gizmo, Alexander decided he was so special she had to keep him. Now this curious, friendly cat sleeps with her and enjoys helping her at the computer and watching TV. Im glad he came along.
- Cheerful is a 9-week-old torbie that Alexander and her college-age daughter are currently fostering. In fact, Alexanders daughter is so enthralled with Cheerful she just might adopt the kitten herself.
