The story of the big snow

Many of us like to ski at Breckenridge, but sometimes, the wind and cold gets to be a bit much. When this happens, it's perfectly okay to take a break. Next time you do so, why not explore the town? Because of the Breck 150, there are some interesting exhibits going on.

Today Summit Daily has a great story about an exhibit at the Barney Ford Museum. It features photos of the big snow of 1898 to 1899, where there was so much snow that they had to build snow tunnels so that people could walk through town. The photographer, E. Stewart, was considered to be an amateur. However, his photos were quite impressive.

There are many stories associated with the Great Storm. Some of them will appear in my book (shameless plug) Breckenridge: A Guide to the Sights and Slopes of Summit County. Here's a sneak preview.

The above photo features Ella Foote. She was the daughter of Robert Foote, who owned the Denver Hotel, which was located on Main Street. Today, that building houses Peek a Boo Toys. When Ella grew up, she married a man whose last name was Theobald. Today,  a descendant of the Theobald family lives in Breckenridge. In fact, his family once owned the Barney Ford home. In 2004, it was Robin Theobald who raised the money to open the Barney Ford home as a museum. This year, he and his wife Patti were crowned king and queen of the Ullr Parade.
