Don't get caught unprepared driving in the Colorado High Country. Again it is that time of year to remind everyone, Colorado weather is unpredicable.
You know you have seen them. The few that are caught in trying to get over some random pass, highway, bi-ways along the scenic High Country when there is a sudden change in the weather.
Yes,it is amazing! Half the time you wonder 'what were they thinking!' Now because of them your stuck having to get around the spinning wheels the no/slow motion vehicle. Going No Where FAST, but
of course pedal to the metal baby!
Note to self, Just give some gas and eventually there will be some traction does not really work.
After years of living in the mountain town of Winter Park, I am sooo sorry to say it finally happened. After 24 years of living here, I am ashamed to say I heard the news, Channel 4, reported the possibility of snow in the High Country. Pulling out from Grand Sport Shop I even thought to myself, 'gosh it really is cloudy and cold. Should I take the 4 wheel vehicle just in case?'
Long story short at about the third switch back on Berthoud Pass the back end of
my summer driving car, started to slip away. Not the invigorating feeling of the road or the smooth transition that normally would be a great driving experience. That was no where to be felt.. In fact, the back end started to twitch and wiggle.
SO Now What? Call to the man, my honey, asking a series of quick series of Question. Not unlike a quick interrogation, of an intangible conversation in a short series of broken cell service.
'Honey the car...'
'the back end, wiggly.'..
what about the tires can they hold in snow?'
'Nooooooooooooo,' He says!
'How much, snow?'
I am thinking as the car is registering 36*, 31*, 30* degrees in the outdoor tempature. Another Quick assessment of the snow/slush and how many hours before the roads may freeze. Could I justify the extra time, if I need to stay in Denver, what about the kids, worse case could I get them home from the soccer game....?
Now every parent know what runs through our brain under duress, however, all this could have been avoided if I simply took an extra minute to check the road and make sure the weather was conducive to my fun summer car.
As we know, the weather in Colorado changes sometimes hour by hour. As I write this one, the rain is pelting the house and the lightening is awesome.Just another reminder of how fast the storm fronts come in and you best defense is being prepared...Seems like The Boy Scouts were Right.
