The "Today" show on NBC announced Wednesday that Grouse Mountain Resort overlooking Vancouver, Canada, will be the morning program's central broadcasting location during the 2010 Winter Olympics next February. NBC holds the U.S. rights to broadcast the Olympics.
Area to stay open for skiing
While the Olympic alpine-skiing events will be held two hours away at Whistler Blackcomb Resort, Grouse Mountain can expect a huge windfall of publicity from the broadcasts. The ski area was already profiled on "Today" earlier this week. During the Olympics, Grouse Mountain plans to remain open for day and night skiing.
Just minutes from downtown Vancouver, the ski area may be reached by taking the Grouse Mountain Skyride, the largest aerial tramway in North America. The Skyride is open throughout the year.
The ski area has a vertical drop of 1,260 feet from the top elevation of 4,100 feet. An average annual snowfall of only 102 inches is supplemented by snowmaking that covers 75 percent of the terrain.
