A high temperature of 85 degrees Saturday was not a problem at the grand opening ceremony for Liberty University's new skiing and snowboarding hill in Lynchburg, Va. The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre uses a synthetic material and misting system to simulate the feel of snow.
The total skiable area of 40,537 square feet was installed on Liberty Mountain, located on the university's campus. The total slope length is approximately 500 feet. The facility will be open for students and at times for the general public.
The facility consists of a main slope with separate lanes. Features on the main slope include a cornice drop, three kickers, two grind rails and an 11-foot high quarter pipe. A beginner slope is also available.
Snowflex is made by Briton Engineering, a British company that had previously installed the technology in Europe, Hong Kong and Lebanon. The slope at Liberty is the company's first project in the United States.
