Mountain resort festivals honor the huckleberry

Huckleberries are abundant in the mountains this summer.

This is a good year for Huckleberries. The fact that huckleberries are being advertised on Craigslist for a mere $25 a gallon is a strong indicator. If you’ve ever picked them, accumulating a gallon is a lot of hard work. Throw in dealing with heat, bugs and the chance of getting busted by a bear for raiding his stash, and it seems like they should cost a lot more.

Not this year. Joel Armstrong of Spokane, who owns a condo at Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Sandpoint, Idaho, says the huckleberry bushes at the higher elevations of the ski area are laden with fat, juicy fruit. Just in time for Schweitzer’s Huckleberry Festival on Sunday, Aug 2.

Not to be outdone, Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho is throwing a berry bash of its own on Saturday, Aug. 1.

Schweitzer’s event starts early Sunday with a huckleberry breakfast. Then its open season on the slopes. Throughout the day the Huckleberry Jam Band provides the live music as huckleberries are featured in treats handicrafts and a pie eating contest.

On Saturday Silver Mountain is giving guests the opportunity to bring the berries they pick on the slopes back to Noah’s Restaurant in the gondola village for custom preparation. Options will include huckleberry topped ice cream, huckleberry martinis, huckleberry lemonade and huckleberry elk skewers. There will also be a huckleberry pie cook off.

For those who love huckleberries, either of these mountain events offers a chance to indulge their passion, and beat the heat at alpine elevation. If you can't make it, there's always Craigslist.
