Reuschelle’s Cheesecakes

We’ve got one more brilliant event coming up on top of our annually scheduled local meetups.

This Saturday and Sunday San Francisco is host to the 15th annual Ghiradelli Chocolate Festival. Two solid days of featured confections and prestigious culinary artists, all of whom are offering samples of their most delectable wares. It’s enough to wet anyone’s appetite.

Among the vendors invited to share their gastronomic artistry is Oakland’s very own Victor Harris, owner and solo chef of Reuschelle’s Cheesecakes. Victor won the East Bay Express’s “Best Of” award in 2009 for his rich, smooth and entrepreneurial approach to gourmet desert. Shortly after he received a monumental boost in celebrity after one of his cakes fell into the hands of science blogger extraordinaire PZ Myers and from there into the hands of readers across the country.

If you’ve been skeptical in the Bay Area for any length of time, odds are you’ve tasted one of Victor’s many diverse recipes or met someone who has. Whether he’s sampling bites (and beats) during Mouth Off Wednesday’s at the Air Lounge on 9th Street or handing out pieces between talks at SkeptiCal, his cheesecake remains one of those secrets we want to keep, but like a bird of paradise, we know should be released to the greater world.

Sporting a shirt that proclaims “Baking is science for hungry people“ Victor’s homebrew approach to food, science and skepticism is simple, powerful and oh so delicious.* With recipes ranging from Apple Caramel to White Chocolate Chip Raspberry, he’s got it all. My personal favorite would have to be Chocolate Cayenne, but the list stretches long and to taste them all… well that’s quite a dream.

More seriously, it’s a great honor and opportunity for Victor to be invited to the festival, but it also means he has to pay out of pocket for the over 5,000 samples he’ll be giving away this weekend.

So head over to SF, buy some tickets [Use the discount code "reuschelle" for a 10% discount on --tickets], support a rising Skeptic and enjoy a taste of the divine.

*I know I keep saying that, but seriously check out his reviews if you don’t believe me. Better yet, show up Saturday, buy some tickets and give the stuff a taste yourself! It’s mindblowing.
