Mims was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised Roman Catholic, and attended a Catholic elementary school through the eighth grade, by which time he was a confirmed atheist. He developed a curiosity about religious thought, and studied under Dr. E. Thomas Lawson, a founder of the scientific study of religion and cognition, at Western Michigan University, where he obtained his B.A in Comparative Religion in 1977.
