The name “Jane Doe” is used whenever you cannot identify a woman by name. So, you call her Jane Doe. Consider the source of your thoughts about Jane. What information can you rely on? You can rely on what you see to a certain extent. You might be able to rely on the visual things like her height, weight, color and approximate age; maybe or maybe not? All you really know is what is in front of you, only her exterior packaging, if you will. If she is not wearing a wedding ring, she maybe single or not. Just ask, her if you want to know.
Other information will have to come from another source if you are unable to communicate with Jane. Where is your information coming from? Is she a public person or a private person? Who do you trust to give you information about Jane? Do you listen to gossip about her? Do you read information about her? You really don’t know where to start and you should just start with Jane. Most of us are visually orientated and look at Jane and make basic assumptions. You might even listen to other people’s views and opinions of Jane. Be careful, of listening to those that say they know Jane. Remember, that you are someone’s “Jane Doe”. Don’t believe everything that you are told about Jane Doe. There is so much more to her than what you or anyone else sees. Her name is not Jane and she may or may not have eyes like a “doe” (a female deer).
Jane is who she is, yet you don’t really know what you are seeing when you look at her. People stereotype Jane and put her into categories that she does not belong in. Jane is an educated Detroit-Single-Woman who does not speak about what she is thinking to everyone she sees. She only tells you what she wants you to know. And when you open your mouth and rattle on she listens to what you have to say, and all that you say. She knows that when you open your mouth, you let people into your way of thinking. She is knowledgeable that way. You see, Jane was educated at home, in church, in school, at work and in the street. She was taught by her Mother, Grandmother, and Teachers. Some of her teachers were people that she saw and paid attention to. She learned more than they intended to teacher her. One important lesson was that, “You don’t have to tell everyone what you think”. Keep some things to yourself. In other words, have some mystery to yourself. Don’t be such an open book.
You see, you can learn people by watching and observing what they do and what they choose not to do as well. The reasoning behind the why and why a person does or doesen't do something is more important than what they say. For instance, a person who says they like red but wears blue all the time. Doesn’t this person really prefer blue more than red? If not, is blue there uniform? Just pay more attention to what a person does, and listen to what they say. And you will know what a person (man) is really telling you about them and how they really feel about you.
Jane is a watcher, a doer and a listener. She watches everything that you do. She does what she must to survive. She listens to what you say. If you speak calmly you might get a response. But most of all ,Jane reads and reads. And you think you know all about Jane. But you really don’t know her at all, that is why you call her “Jane Doe”. All you have to go on are assumptions, why not step back and take the time to get to know Jane. Then, you will know that there really is no one named, Jane Doe.

Sharon Guillory truly has 'women of Detroit' in her heart. There are so many wonderful women in Detroit. Much about us is similar and much about is is different. I think Sharon is onto something.
Given we're the largest major city in the country WITHOUT an 'Office of Women' ...maybe Guillory should write about the universals (Pluses and minuses) of Detroit Women. Also, maybe she can start writing about what is NOT available to us that is available to women in every other major city in this country.
Peace
