How to wear jeans in 2009

Denim looks are the quintessential palette of American style, but that doesn't mean jeans can't evolve. Here's how to freshen it up in 2009.

Flares: Follow Katie Holmes' and Nicole Richie's lead by slipping into flares and extreme bootcut jeans. Wear in a lighter rinse for a 70s look that goes with huaraches and gladiator sandals, as well as heels and boots. Top off with soft, flowing blouses, t-shirts or cardigans.

The New Boyfriend: Consider the baggy, hole-y cuffed style that Katie, Reese and Amanda Peet wore your 2008 ex. The new boyfriend is a little more classic, so buy a looser-fitting straight-leg jean from Banana Republic or J.Crew. If you're petite, you can even try a size up in a cigarette jean for the same look. Wear on the weekends with flats, sandals, and basic tops, tees and camis.

Skinny and cropped: Skinny  jeans go either way this year: rock'n'roll or classic Audrey. Rocker styles favored by Nicole Richie feature lots of rips and tears and should be worn with booties or sharp pumps.

For a more classic look, cuff your skinny jeans or buy a cropped version. Black and dark indigo washes are most flattering. For this look, stick with flats, tall boots (to tuck in your jeans) or high-heeled sandals without ankle straps. My favorites are the J.Brand 941 skinny low-rise jean in Jett.

Denim pencil skirt: Denim pencil skirts in a dark wash are sleek and can work for office style or after-hours fun. Wear with colorful heels or tall boots to snazz them up.
