So the hard part is over – you’ve landed the job – your dream job (go you). But your wardrobe is not quite ready for the new 9-5 gig. Since you haven’t yet received your first paycheck, set a budget on how much you want to spend on work attire.
The key when shopping for work is to buy items that can be mix-matched and layered – creating many looks from just a few pieces.
Here is a list of 8 must-have items that every woman should have in her closet.
1. White tailored shirt
This white button-down should fit you well. It should be flattering and accentuate your best features. It may look no different than the one your hubby or bf wears under his suit jacket, but yours is cut specifically for a woman. Check out this stretch cotton style that is uber comfy and can be worn tucked or untucked.
2. Black trousers
A pair of high-quality, flat front black trousers is a necessity. If you can buy only one pair, select a length that can be paired with your most commonly worn heels. Choose a lightweight material that will work year-round (and won’t wrinkle easily).
3. Little black dress (LBD)
Choose a LBD in the style that makes you feel most comfortable. Let’s face it; you’re at work, not a formal event. Comfort is key here. A solid wrap-dress looks great on all body types, accentuating just the right areas.
When it comes to length, there really are no guidelines (just make sure your goods are covered when you sit down). A great LBD can go from day-to-night so this is definitely a splurge item!
4. Black pumps
Black pumps are quite possibly the most versatile item in a woman’s closet. When it comes to materials, you have a few options - plain leather, suede and patent leather. Remember to spray these with leather protector spray before wearing them out in bad weather (you should probably invest in a good pair of rain boots, too!) so that they make it through the season.
Strapped or unstrapped, these styles are equally fabulous (and affordable).
As for heel height, go with something you feel comfortable in. As stated above, comfort is key in the work place. Make sure to walk around the house before you wear them out (and keep the receipt just in case).
5. Black blazer
The black blazer is a great layering piece. And because it’s black, it goes with practically everything. When selecting a blazer, choose one that suits your body type. If you want to appear longer, choose a style that’s longer. If you want to accentuate your slim waistline, make sure you select a blazer that is cinched at the waist. Whichever style you choose; make sure it’s flattering and modern (no shoulder pads PLEASE)
6. Statement necklace
A statement necklace is the perfect accessory to a simple outfit. When selecting a color, bronze and brushed silver go with mostly everything and aren’t so flashy. You can also add a modern twist to a classic set of pearls.
Keep in mind that proportion is key here. If you are small framed, make sure to choose a smaller necklace. If you are broad shouldered, be adventurous and get something a bit bigger than you normally would. A statement necklace is a great way to dress up a causal outfit (think casual Fridays with your fave pair of jeans).
7. Solid long-sleeve t's
A black or white tee can be worn under almost anything (even a LBD if done correctly). They are the BEST layering pieces and can be removed if it gets too hot or added if it gets a bit chilly. These long-sleeve t’s are comfortable and wash really well!
8. Blue Jeans – for Casual Fridays, of course!
Yes, it’s true; a woman can never have enough jeans. But your favorite “going out” jeans are probably not going to be appropriate to wear to work. Jeans should not be so low-rise that they show the midriff or have torn, holey knees. Flared, boot cut, wide-legged and skinny styles are all fine. Just make sure to choose a darker wash, as they tend to be dressier.
Also, take the length of the jeans into consideration. The length should be just right for both your favorite heels and flats (cuffing may apply). These modern-styled trouser jeans are a great option!
All of the stores listed above can be found in one convenient location in the Ville -– The Summit.
