The Deerstalker hat: no other hat in the world is more associated with one person. Unfortunately, because only one person is known to wear this, it's best that Sherlock is changing it.
In all practicality, the Deerstalker is only good for stalking deer. At that time, only those who were living in rural areas were known to wear such a hat. Being a cat about London and a master of disguise, casually wearing a Deerstalker hat would make one stick out like a sore, country thumb.
The only reason Sherlock is associated with such an unfortunate top is that in Silver Blaze, he is described to wear a hat that fits the DS description. Following this, Sidney Paget illustrated Holmes wearing the infamous trademark. The rest is history.
Fortunately, Director Guy Ritchie has thought this through and realized how non-functional such a hat is in the city. So, he allowed Robert Downey Jr. to pick out his very own, more authentic Fedora for the upcoming movie, Sherlock Holmes. According to Guy, "(Downey) was very passionate about it".
There seem to be quite a few changes in store for the infamous detective, some much needed changes.
