Do Pets Make Good Holiday Gifts?

Adorable and cheery as they can be, pets still do not often make the best gifts.

While it may seem like a great idea to give someone a cuddly cat or dog can an enduring companion and source of joy, giving a pet as a gift should be a well thought-out decision. Oftentimes, it may not be such a good idea.

There are a number of things that should be considered before adopting a pet on behalf of another person.

Before giving a pet as a gift, account for these factors:

Has the person explicitly expressed a desire to have a pet?

Does the person have a home that can accommodate a pet? (And are they allowed pets in their home?)

Do they have the time to care for a pet? If a dog, would they have time to walk it?

Do they have the financial means to provide for a pet's food and healthcare needs?

Are they responsible enough to care for a pet? (an especially important question when considering giving a pet to a child)

Also, if they don't have any pets now, why not? If they do have pets, would they be able to care for another?

If you find yourself uncertain about the answers to any of these questions, than it is best to choose another gift and leave the decision to adopt up to the individual.

A pet is not a toy or an object; it is a living animal that requires proper care and nurturing. Don't underestimate the responsibility of caring for an animal, and don't place that responsibility upon another person unless it has been thoroughly discussed and planned for. If you are certain that a pet would be suitable for a person, then take them to the shelter and have them find a pet that they bond with and choose to adopt themselves.
