Ladies, hold on to your hats: Jude Law is coming to Broadway this fall. The 36-year-old actor will star in the title role Donmar Warehouse’s “Hamlet” during its twelve week engagement at the Broadhurst Theater in New York City beginning in September.
Mr. Law’s performance of “Hamlet” marks his first London stage performance in seven years. The transition to Broadway will also mark his first return to the New York stage in fourteen years.
Mr. Law’s performance in the London production has already caught critics’ attention. Audiences are praising his heart-felt performance as the Danish prince. Many critics have said that the intrigue surrounding Mr. Law’s life make him perfectly suited for the role of Shakespeare’s troubled Danish prince.
The play, which has sold out in London for the remainder of its time at the Wyndham Theatre, will take a brief voyage to Elsinore Castle in Denmark in August before moving to New York City’s Broadhurst Theater. Previews for the production are set to begin on September 12, 2009. The show officially comes to Broadway in October, with the opening slated for October 6, 2009. The artistic director for the Donmar Warehouse production, Michael Grandage, will accompany Mr. Law to Broadway. Grandage, who directed the Wyndham Theatre production, will also direct the Broadway production. Several other stars of the Donmar Warehouse production are also expected to cross the pond and make the move to Broadway.
Jude Law, who got his start in soap operas and stage plays, first came to Broadway in 1995 when he starred opposite Kathleen Turner in “Indiscretions,” a play he first performed in on the London stage. Mr. Law went on to pursue a successful film career, starring in films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain.
Tickets for the Broadway performance of “Hamlet” will be made available to the public beginning July 18, 2009.
