The woman who called 911 to report the brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Richmond, California, was honored by city officials on Tuesday night, November 17.
The Richmond City Council gave Margarita Vargas, 18, a commendation for her role in reporting the October 24 attack. Police say as many as 10 young men participated in the gang rape that lasted 2 1/2 hours. Investigators say that more than 20 people witnessed the attack but did nothing.
Three adults and three juveniles are in jail facing charges related to the case. All are being prosecuted as adults.
Vargas received a standing ovation by those in attendance for the council meeting.
She will be honored again on Wednesday, November 18, at the West Contra Costa County Unified School District. That meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on 3400 MacDonald Avenue at the Lavonya DeJean Middle School.
