Aruba, Jamaica...North Korea? hmm. Though Pyongyang does not top my dream getaway list---there is something remarkable about travelling there as it is easily one of the least accessible and most restricted destinations in the world. After years of tension between North Korea (deemed a member of "the axis of evil" by President Bush) and the US, it is no wonder that there is a lot of fear and curiosity about visiting a country tightly controlled by a leader considered to be one of the last true dictators.
Noah Lang, a partner at Electric Works Gallery, and his wife Kris, visited Pyongyang earlier this year for their honeymoon! This Saturday, Lang will be sharing images and stories of his trip to Pyongyang this Saturday at the Soapbox lecture hosted by Ray Beldner. Lang is no stranger to visiting friction-stricken territories--In 1987, he walked across the border between East and West Germany via Checkpoint Charlie and made two more trips to East Germany before the wall came down in 1989.
Given the nature of his past experiences and his backgroung in German literature and Cultural Studies (@ Georgetown University), I expect Lang's remarks about his travel to be astute and compelling. Bring your laundry and learn something new.
The Soap Box Lectures @ Bernal Bubbles (397 Cortland Ave @ Bennington). Saturday, December 13 @ 10 PM.
