Sweet Revolution caramels are a wonderful anytime gift for candy lovers. I was introduced to them by a former boss last year; in recent months, they've got their website up and running so you can buy caramels online. Which you should do, as soon as you finish reading this post, because they're That Good.
Made by baker Anastasia Hagerstrom, what sets Sweet Revolution caramels apart is their commitment to fine quality organic ingredients and their lack of processed white sugar. These caramels consist of maple syrup and honey rather than the granulated sugar other caramels contain. With the addition of vanilla bean and sea salt, Sweet Revolution caramels are buttery, rich and complex. The use of these invert sugars gives Sweet Revolution caramels a noticeably different taste from other caramel candies; the maple, vanilla and butter each have their moments on the tongue.
Design kiddies, take note: the packaging is lovely as well. Delicately wrapped in parchment papers and nestled in a small brown paper box adorned with a wax seal and low-key graphics, these are an elegant and whimsical gift. One of the testimonials on SR's new website perhaps puts it best, stating that "I had one guy state that 'It felt like something just happened.' He got a feeling of satisfaction."
The caramels are currently available at Bi-Rite Market, Rainbow Grocery and through their website. $9.99 at Bi-Rite for a box of 6 and $20.00 online for a box of 12, the caramels are large enough to be split and savored. Get them now while they're an underground phenomenon, then do a friend a favor and bring her a caramel.
