Sweeping coastal views, a waterfall, and great fish tacos - San Pedro Valley Park

It's no secret that many visitors as well as locals head south of San Francisco, down Highway 1 to Pacifica for beaches surfing, and picturesque views of the Pacific.  The drive through Devil's Slide, a winding stretch of Hwy 1 along sheer cliffs above the ocean, is alone worth the trip.  But hurry, because the tunnel will be completed soon leaving the Slide to cyclists only.

While the beaches are fantastic, I'm a much bigger fan of the incredible hiking opportunities that offer hearthumping climbs and sweeping views of the Pacific.  One such hike can be found in San Pedro Valley Park, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains just south of Pacifica.  The 1,100 acre park is home to 1,900 foot Montara Mountain as well as 175 ft Brooks Falls which is incredible during the rainy season.

The perfect hike is a nice 6 mile, 3 hour loop that starts on the Montara Mountain Trail and finishes on the Brooks Creek Trail.  One word of caution: this is not a leisurely stroll.  Be prepared to sweat and bring plenty of water. The hike start on the West end of the parking lot and involves a hardy climb to the top of Montara Mountain.  Along the way you get the awesome coastal views per the accompanying photo ending with 360 degree views at the top of the mountain.  On a clear day, you can see the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Tamalpais to the North.  On the way back down, I highly recommend you veer right on to Brooks Creek Trail for a look at Brooks Falls.  The 3 tier waterfall proves you don't have to be in Yosemite for awesome waterfall views.  If you go in the summer, be prepared for a trickle rather than a river.  You'll finish back at the parking lot after a great workout and even better views.

Now that you're finished, you have one more decision to make.  The park has ample picnic tables just off the parking lot for your apres hike beverage and lunch, giving you the ability to soak up some amongst the trees.  But if you really want to live, hop back in the car and head North on Highway 1 to Guerrero's Taqueria in Pacifica.  Guerrero's is an authentic taqueria with fantastic fish tacos and ice cold Pacificos.  They have a decent patio out back where you can catch a few rays while enjoying your lunch and soaking in another great day trip.
