Stanislaus National Forest Knight Fire, Mount Elizabeth, and Pilot Peak Fire Lookouts reported the beginnings of the Knight Fire on July 26th. Now burning approximately 650 acres, winds headed up the canyon on Sunday and Monday and fanned the fire, which burned rugged canyon terrain areas. If traveling in Tuolumne County, check CalFire for current information as winds may change fire breadth.

According to CalFire, 30 residences were threatened Monday. Fire teams are preparing for flames to move both east and west through the river canyon. Steep brush and timber in inaccessible terrain continues to challenge fire crews.

Stanislaus National Forest asks travelers to avoid Southfork Road in Twain Harte to allow room for fire equipment. According to the Modesto Bee, "the blaze is expected to create smoky conditions in parts of Tuolumne County for the next few days. When visibility is three to five miles, the air is considered unhealthy for seniors, young children and people with emphysema, asthma or heart disease, and they should limit their time outdoors, county health officials said. If visibility is no more than a mile, the conditions are very unhealthy for everyone."

Signs indicating that smoke may be hazardous include cough, sore or scratchy throat, sinus irritation, headaches, difficulty breathing, stinging in eyes, and runny nose. Keep windows and doors shut unless temperatures are too hot.
