Project Runway and the city

Dino-Ray watched Project Runway last night. Dino-Ray has yet to be 100 percent entertained by this season’s batch of designers. Dino-Ray is already tired of hearing Suede talk about himself in the third person. Dino-Ray is about to write his take on last night’s show.

Last night our designers went out into the urban jungle of Manhattan and snapped shots of the city at night. From the pictures they took, they were to create a garment suitable for a night on the town.

This challenge seems very familiar to me. Maybe it’s because they did something like it in season two – except they didn’t have to make a garment for a specific time of day. They just had to make a garment inspired by digicam snap shots of the city. (It was also the same episode where Zulema stole Nick’s model! Or should I say when Shatangy stole Nick’s model?)

In any matter, the designers are starting to unfold character-wise, but not by much.

We learned that Keith can be very competitive and isn’t there to make friends. We also learned that he is a gay man raised in a Mormon family. I honestly put him in the macho “man’s man” role in the very first episode. I was kind of right.

So as I watched the show, I was kind of bored. As of now, nothing is really making me jump up and down in this season.

Hold on. I take that back. I really enjoyed it when Tim Gunn kept on saying “Hollatchaboy!” It was funny and awkward all at once. It was like watching John McCain do the Macarena.

I also enjoy the leathery lass Stella. Her accent alone adds a much needed boost of character for this season.

But the show really doesn’t revolve around character. It’s all about the fashion – which really hasn’t been making my eyes widen with joy either.

Right from the start of this episode (and almost every other episode), we get a hint of who will be in the top and who will be in the bottom. They spent a lot of time focusing on Keith and his diva ways. We also get some footage on Kenley, Terri, Emily, Leanne and Jennifer (I still can’t tell them a part!).

Poor Jennifer. Her design inspired by a bunch of clocks was hideous from the start. It looked like someone made it in a women’s prison sewing class.

Keith’s design just looked straight up raggedy. He was gushing over it, but it just looks like a craft project massacre.

Leanne killed it in this one with her architecturally sound skirt inspired by a grating and Terri wowed the judges with her “hip-hop chic” skirt and pants combo. But it was Kenley’s bulbous print dress that won the judge’s hearts.

I wasn’t a fan of this dress – mainly because of the print. The silhouette was very modern but the print made me think of this dress my sister wore in her senior class photos in 1993. I just couldn’t get over how 90210 it was – but it was definitely executed well.

The bottom two were Emily and Jennifer. As the judges continued to tell them how much they sucked amidst the dramatic elimination music, Emily got “auf’d,” which is understandable. Her dress looks like the model vomited ruffles all over her LBD after a night on the town.

Still, I can’t help but think, Emily’s dress was well executed, but ugly. Jennifer’s dress was matronly and poorly executed. If I had it my way, both of them would’ve been out. It makes me really think of what the judges' real reasoning was.

Nonetheless, we bid farewell to the Sacramento native.

Honorable mentions of the evening: Joe’s lantern inspired dress, Jerell’s glamazon dress and Kelli’s rock-vant garde garment. See all of them here.
