If you haven’t heard about the great health benefits of pomegranates, you’ll need to crawl out from under your rock. But, even if you know they’re good for you, there’s so much more to these delicious and odd fruits than the absurdly high amounts of antioxidants.
First, the health benefits, a quick refresher. Pomegranates are linked to helping with heart problems, various cancers, cholesterol concerns and numerous other ailments. Personally, I hate to break my food down into these segmented ideas of health. So, read more if you like, this is good stuff: People's Pharmacy, Pomegranates Have Many Health Benefits; Associated Content: Health Benefits of Pomegranates and The Awesome Health Benefits of Pomegranates You Need to Know, and finally the study Comparison of Antioxidant Potency of Commonly Consumed Polyphenol-Rich Beverages in the United States (be aware this study was funded in part by POM Wonderful a company that makes pomegranate juice).
Now for the fun stuff. These amazing fruits offer great flavor, delicious juice and loads of fun. If you have kids, these can be an event, of course very young children can choke on the seeds, so use your judgment.
I love to toss a few handfuls of seeds into spinach salads. Try this salad, fresh from the garden, organic, spinach mixed with arugula (both are in season year round for us in the Bay Area), sunburst tomatoes, walnuts and pomegranate seeds. Toss with a light vinaigrette, mix 2 parts organic, extra virgin olive oil, 1 part unfiltered apple cider vinegar, 1/3 part thyme, and sea salt to taste. You can also top with your favorite asiago and definitely some fresh ground pepper.
The unfortunate part of pomegranates is that it can be quite a bit of work to if you just want to enjoy their rich flavor. There are a number of juice options on the market. While these boast high antioxidants, and do have great flavor. They can be pricey. Go with what works for you, but don’t leave these delicious vital, delectable fruits out of your diet. They’re only in season until January, so enjoy them while you can.
