Dreams have and remain a fount of inspiration for artists and arguably the seedling of motivation behind every act, idea, composition, and work of art created. Though dreams are a topic that have been broached by artists for centuries, it is always encouraging to discover artists whose work inject new life and refreshing perspectives into this frequently explored subject.
Mission 17's fifth annual juried exhibition, Dream On!, explores dreams from a very timely view. In the wake of deepening economic woes and growing disillusionment, today we find ourselves confronted with the problem of distinguishing between dream and reality as well as maintaining our optimism as we peer into an uncertain future. In this sense, Mission 17's Dream On!, embodies "both the sarcasm and sincerity implied by the phrase."
The works in this show skirt the elusive border between quotidian objects/sceneries and the unknown/absurd--leaving viewers to fill in the blank with their own collective dreams and experiences. Indeed, as William Butler Yeats once said, "In dreams begin responsibilities." When you see this show, allow yourself to sink into the imagination presented in front of you and think about how your resulting thoughts require a certain amount of accountability.
