Michelle Obama dons Zero Maria Cornejo

We are hours away from the nation's most historical inauguration and many fashionistas are sitting at the edge of their seats waiting to see what Michelle Obama wears. At first, my money was on Isaac Mizrahi or the failsafe, but popular amongst political wives, Oscar de la Renta. I also had an affection for the designs sketched by Zac Posen and Diane von Furstenberg.

Then one contender for the coveted inauguration day prize that I overlooked was Zero + Maria Cornejo. The NYC-based Maria Cornejo has a minimalist aesthetic with a tailored kiss of thoughtful detailing.

Mrs. O has a healthy collection of Cornejo pieces that have been specifically tailored for the soon-to-be first lady including eight suits in a variety of colors, two winter coats and three dresses.

“I am thrilled that Michelle Obama is wearing Zero," said Cornejo in a statement. "Like many of the women that purchase the collection, she is a woman of strength, integrity, and intellect. She juggles a family and a career and for that, I admire her so much."

Here she is on The Daily Show in a beautifully cinched ZMC:

Most recently, she donned a ZMC suit on Barack Obama's whistle stop tour from Philadelphia to Washington and she also wore the designer's clothes on the campaign trail.

Here she is campaigning with style alongside her homegirl Jill Biden:

Zero + Maria Cornejo could possibly be the perfect label for Michelle. It's savvy with modern style, but has a desirable amount of modesty. She also proves that you don't have to be a stick-thin runway model to wear these fab garments, therefore making it wearable for the everyday woman...and kudos to Michelle for supporting a lesser-known label.

A look from Zero + Maria Cornejo's Fall 2008 Collection.

I would not be surprised if she chose a gown from this underrated label to wear to an inauguration event. Whatever the trendsetting Mrs. O chooses, Maria Cornejo better be prepared for the tons of business she is about to receive.
