Iran faces international pressures on the Global Day of Action

A San Francisco based-Iranian group is organizing a rally at Civic Center Plaza on Saturday July 25 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On the same day, rallies are planned in more than 105 cities all across the world. Hundreds of thousands of people will be standing in solidarity with Iranians in their fight for human rights.

United4Iran is a nonpartisan collaborative of individuals and human rights organization. It was formed on July 1, 2009 in response to the images of atrocities committed against peaceful protestors in Iran. After watching blogs in horror, Firuzeh Mahmoudi, an Iranian-American mother from San Francisco, decided to plan a Global Day of Action. She immediately set up United4Iran with a rudimentary website. Mahmoudi called Hadi Ghaemi, Director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. Ghaemi then contacted his global network of activists, academics and NGOs.

Ever since, volunteers have been typing, skyping, talking and texting to activists worldwide from Mahmoudi’s living room. The response was overwhelming. Throughout the world, countless people have turned into activists, making the Global Day of Action an unprecedented grassroots movement in solidarity with the people of Iran.

The Global Day of Action is supported by Nobel Laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Shirin Ebadi, Jody Williams, Betty Williams, Mairead Maguire, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Wangari Maathal, Lord David Trimble, Kim Dae-jung, Dolores Huerta, Sean Penn, Dariush, Simin Behbahani, Ismael Khoie, 43 Arab Human Rights Organizations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, FIDH, International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Nobel Women’s Initiative, Peacejam, and Reporters without Borders.

Should these provocative and hostile disturbances in Iran take place, the authorities should not rule the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse these enemies of peace. Despite their claim of representing human rights, these despicable enemies of Iran are basically stopping short of agitating for a war with Iran. They are not protesting against atrocities and serious human rights violations such as the economic siege placed on Iran by the USA, the kidnapping of Iranian diplomats, and an aggressive military build-up in the Persian Gulf. The Iranian people have repeatedly reaffirmed their revolutionary gains and freedom brought by Imam Khomeini and will defend these to them to the last drop of blood, as was seen in the 1980s war with Iraq.

These pathetic gatherings will not gather any turnout in China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Latin America, and in Arab countries i.e. pretty much the entire world. Only in countries that are enemies with Iran will these provocations take place.

I know what you mean. But it is not a bad idea to voice your concern, is it?

Chapaev - There were demonstrations in many of the places you suggested there wouldn't be, even in Arab countries.

As far as distracting from Iran's issues by focusing on other countries, that's a little like excusing one person of rape because somebody else did something like it.

This also isn't about destroying Iran, but trying to stop its out of touch leadership from damaging it any further. Remember, this isn't fringe leftist liberals coming out of nowhere, but former presidents and high ranking religious clerics of Iran who are condemning the recent actions by elements of Iran in control. Men who before June 12th, where approved by Khamenei as suitable to be president.

You may want to think hard about who in Iran is destroying the revolutionary gains and freedoms brought by Khomeini. Who is it that is violating the constitution by attacking peaceful protest? A right given to the Iranian people to prevent tyrants like the Shah from suppressing the will of the people again.
