In an effort to reduce BART's $25 million deficit and pay for necessary bridge construction, the Bay Area Toll Authority is considering a toll increase for most local bridges while BART considers an increase in fare price.
According to state officials, the toll hike might be increased by one dollar in an effort to help pay for $750 million worth of much needed seismic repairs for local bridges.
With the exception of the Bay Bridge, the new toll will be five dollars on all local state-owned bridges. The toll on the Bay Bridge will increase by two dollars--totaling six dollars--during peak commute hours.
Right now, BART''s board of directors is also considering other methods besides a fare increase to deal with the agency's deficit. Such ideas are possible parking rate increases or the elimination of some routes.
