One of the most popular programs at Chinese Culture Center (CCC) is “In Search of Roots.” The only one of its kind in America, the program is a year-long commitment which includes lessons in genealogy, Chinese American history and finally a month-long visit to China to trace your ancestry.
At the moment, the service is available only for CCC members who have ancestry in the Pearl River Delta area in Guangdong Province, but it is looking for more options in the future. Most of San Francisco’s 19th and early 20th century immigrants were born on the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province, especially around the town of Taishan. They were mainly impoverished farmers who looked for better opportunities in America -- Meiguio, or the beautiful country in Chinese -- or gold mountain which means California.
If you are on a mission to find your roots on your own, CCC also offers the Genealogy Research Service. It helps you find out your family history, locate village in Guangdong area, create family trees and give information on Chinese genealogy culture and tips on general local logistics, such as airport, transportation route, and communicating with village people.
