Trees blow in the breeze. The sounds of goats, sheep, children laughing, the train chugging around the track fill the air. The scent of apples and cinnamon creates a dizzying haze over the picnic tables. You wonder if you’re at a carnival. Then it hits you. You’re in a sweet spot – Cover’s Apple Ranch.
In the summer when the weather is good, take the kids and ride the Cover Express. Put your hands in the air and scream through the tunnels. Then, if you can pry the kids off the train, get them tired on the two-story playhouse with slides and swings. Next, stroll through the barnyard. A handful of corn kernels are pocket change, and feeding the animals may be one of the best parts of your visit. See Moses, the horned sheep, and visit the farm’s other residents: baby goats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, geese, and cows.
It’s not yet harvest time, but you wouldn’t know it. Apples abound in every form. Try a Mile High Pie or apple-nut bread. Sip some juice, cider, or apple beer. Taste the creamiest applesauce you’ve ever had. Go inside the eat-in deli and bakery and get lost in the shelves of homemade of pies, cookies, and breads.
Don’t like dem apples? Wait. There are plenty of other snacks and dishes. You’ll find salads, sandwiches, and warm lunches, like enchiladas on the menu. Reserve your spot at a Friday dinner event or pick up a dinner to go.
Cover’s ranch has been around a while, although it has exchanged hands and names a few times. Apple orchards were planted in the1920s. Although many of the trees are past their prime years, they continue to produce premium antique and hard-to-find varieties. Paragon, Stamin Winesaps, Arkansas Black, Common Red Delicious, Early Blaze, and Golden Delicious are all harvested. So, go enjoy one of California’s little cornucopias.
If riding the train is a deal-breaker, call ahead to ensure it’s running. The Cover Express runs on Saturdays during good weather months. Open weekdays 6:30am to 6pm and Saturday 8am-5pm. Closed Sundays. Friday night dinners are by reservation only, so call early.
