Malik Nadal Hasan is alive and in stable condition. Hasan first said to have been killed was wounded but alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said.

Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot four times and was in critical condition.

Army psychiatrist Malik Nadal Hasan allegedly opened fire at Fort Hood Army base Thursday killing 12 people and wounding 31 others. Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia, was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq on Nov. 28.

Cone said at a news conference the shooting began around 1:30 p.m. All the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening. "It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Cone said.

The soldier used two handguns in the attack. It was not clear if the gunman had stopped to reload. Ten of the dead were soldiers. One of the victims was a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.

Army officials said 11 of the victims died at the scene and a 12th died later at a hospital.

The Associated Press reportes Hasan received a poor performance evaluation at Walter Reed but revealed no further details.

Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues. At least 25,000 people are at the base on any given day.
