The entry deadline for the San Francisco City Golf Championship has been extended to February 1, 2009. The City, as the tournament is known, is the oldest consecutively played competition in the world. Other tournaments such as the British Open have existed for longer, but only the The City continued unabated through every war in the last century.
There have been a number of golfers who have won The City en route to successful professional careers, such as Ken Venturi and Julie Inkster. There have also been those who tried and failed, like Johnny Miller and Tom Watson. As entertaining as the Championship Flight might be, the biggest draw of The City may well be the Open Flight - open to any golfing human with a pulse over the age of 12.
That's right, you could be a San Francisco City Champion. First step, entering the tournament. The tournament is match play, and the Open Flights kick off with an 18-hole qualifying round at Lincoln Park on February 7th & 8th.
If you plan to play The City you best get familiar with Lincoln Park and Harding Park golf courses, and you better get used to playing the ball as it lies. A long-standing tradition in The City, there are no winter rules. Ball plugged? Time to take your lumps and figure a way out of it. And if you've ever played Lincoln or Harding in the winter time, you know just how deeply a ball can sink into the muck after a good rain storm.
Casual golfers would be well advised to familiarize themselves with the tournament schedule, as The City will be taking over Harding and Lincoln most weekends of February and March.

Can your readers assume that you (Q) will be entering?
Max: I wish. Even though I'd probably be 1-and-done, my work schedule kicks into high gear at the end of January (meaning no free weekends).
c'mon there Greg....work, smoork, wouldn't you rather just quit your job and golf anyway?
The Bubbameister will be there with my mudder gear - ready and raring to go!!
