"When I first heard her, I couldn't believe my ears. It is a very rare occasion when the world is blessed with a voice like this."
–Freddie Jackson
"She's simply amazing."
–Neal Schon (Journey)
"What an amazing voice; sounds like she should have been making disco records in 1978, which to me is the highest compliment I can pay a singer."
–Moby
OAKLAND, CA — U.S. Billboard #1 Artist Shayna Steele will be returning to the city of San Francisco, for a special show at the Coda Jazz Club on April 30th, 2010. After bringing down the house at her CD release party at Yoshi's SF last November, and setting off an electrifying performance at Coda in January, Shayna Steele brings her amazing voice to the Coda stage once again.
With an industry resume longer than your arm, the singer/songwriter has acquired many labels from “Broadway crooner” to “disco screamer,” “Chaka Khaner” to “R&B belter,” and “jazz chanteuse” to“ electro diva.” While each label denotes a unique facet of Shayna's style, her immense talent defies categorization. On her latest album, Steele delivers her most confident and cohesively eclectic set to date, answering the question “Who is Shayna Steele?” with a definitive (and defiant): I'll Be Anything.
Shayna dove headfirst into music at an early age, winning several pageants and talent shows, including an appearance on Ed McMahon's Star Search at age 15. Her artistic ambitions eventually led her to New York in 1996, where after just three months, her dynamic voice and fierce delivery landed her a role as the first replacement in the Broadway production of Rent. Joining the original cast at its peak quickly parlayed into standout roles in Jesus Christ Superstar and Hairspray. No stranger to prime time TV, Shayna has made appearances on The Grammy's, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, and Carson Daly. She also did a singing feature on HBO's The Sopranos and will be performing in the much anticipated new Sex and the City movie.
In addition to the Broadway and Hollywood scene, artists like Moby have collaborated with her in top selling singles. She sang on the smash hit, "Disco Lies" off Moby's 2008 release Last Night, where the song rocketed to #1 on the US Billboard Dance charts and was later featured in J.J. Abram's blockbuster Cloverfield. Now more than ever, Shayna's voice is in high demand with recent features on the Grammy-nominated album Great Joy and the soundtracks of Legally Blonde 2, Bambi 2, and the remake of Hairspray starring John Travolta.
These achievements have finally culminated in the release of her first full-length album, I'll Be Anything. The record takes the listener on a journey through the joy and pain of a talented artist blooming into her own. She says, “This album covers so much of my life. Whether it was one beautiful second or one horrible year… I couldn't limit myself to one sound, one voice or style of writing, but … it all makes sense. It all flows.” Moving from gritty street funk to samba to piano croon and back, I'll Be Anything, is a strong personal statement from an artist whose beautiful voice can't be denied.
